Jake, Albert and Scrappiness Are Keys to Victory Over Mets

Cardinals fans had a lot to be happy for in Thursday’s 6-2 win over the Mets. And not just a win!

The St. Louis Cardinals needed Jake Westbrook to step up Thursday and have a big game.

Jake Westbrook pitched 8 innings for the Cardinals Thursday, earning the win in a 6-2 victory over the Mets.

Jake didn’t disappoint.

He pitched eight innings in the sweltering heat. He gave up four hits and two earned runs. He had three strikeouts.

Jake, now 8-4, is a pretty good pitcher and this performance should calm the anxieties of a lot of his haters. Honestly, haters, you have nothing to complain about with his performance Thursday. Jake steps up when he is needed and today’s performance proves that, indeed.

Cardinal fans also got a look at one of the best middle infield combinations we have had all season in Daniel Descalso and Nick Punto. Theriot sat out Thursday’s game to complete his one-game suspension for his little tirade Sunday in Cincinnati.

This combination of Dirty Dan and Punto also helped Westbrook too, as he was able to get the hitters to ground out. A lot! Descalso, Punto and Albert Pujols combined for two double plays. And that honestly seems like a lot considering how many got fouled up in the Theriot, Schumaker and Pujols combo.

Speaking of Albert Pujols, did you see the home run he hit in the first inning? Take a look at Pujols’ 21st homer of the season. It’s a beauty!

It was also nice to see that fifth inning for Mets. Two errors helped build a good lead for the Cards. Nick Punto reached on a force attempt and on a throwing error by Lucas Duda, Descalso scored and Westbrook moved up to second base. On the next play, Jon Jay singled to Angel Pagan. Westbrook and Punto scored after a throwing error by Pagan.

Yeah … he threw the ball to first. The only person at first was Cards coach Dave McKay.

After the eventful first half of the season the Cardinals have had, it was refreshing to see these errors being made by another team.

Filled with so much snark you could choke, Joe Strauss has a Cards chat. Here’s the transcript. There are usually some good tidbits and this is the only reason I subject to him!

Kyle Lohse returned to St. Louis Thursday due to a “finger issue.” Yeah, I raised an eyebrow on that one!

As of 5 p.m. Thursday, the Cardinals are 1.5 games out of first place as the team heads to Pittsburgh, who are a half game out of first place behind the Brewers.

So, to say this weekend’s series with the Pirates is important would be an understatement! It’s definitely time to capitalize on the win against the Mets and build up a nice little winning streak!
