The Intrigue That Is Mike Matheny

Mike Matheny

I think this World Series championship has spoiled me.

You see, I am what you would call pretty snobby when it comes to my team.

Nothing but the best!

So imagine my surprise when I learn, so far, only one of the six candidates to manage my beloved team has real MLB managing experience.

ONE!

And that one person happens to be former Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona. If you haven’t heard, the Red Sox had a disastrous end to their season. And the remaining Red Sock management seemingly threw Francona under the bus after the manager and team parted ways making much of an alleged addiction to pain medication after a couple of surgeries as well as marital issues.

Francona has yet to have his interview with the Birds on the Bat.

While I prefer a manager with experience, I want a manager with a clear head and a fire in his heart to win. And that very well may not be Francona. We’ll know more of course when he has his interview.

One person who has had an interview: Mike Matheny.

Matheny has ZERO experience.

He was a Gold Glove catcher for the Cardinals who displayed a tremendous amount of leadership for the club. He’s an instructor and spent some time as an analyst for Fox Sports Midwest.

That’s it.

I should be laughing at the mere thought of Mike Matheny as the manager of the Cardinals. Right?

Well. Listen to this interview of Matheny on the Stully and Dunc Show on 101 ESPN in St. Louis. I’ll wait …

Pretty impressive huh? He GETS it. He has ideas. Plans. He has the rapport of all rapports with Dave Duncan, Yadi Molina and most of the pitching staff. Since Matheny and Pujols are in the Dominican Republic this week instructing baseball to a group of youngsters, I’d say they have a nice relationship. I’d venture he could develop a good working relationship with a lot of this team and the current coaching staff.

This is a fun idea!

Who knows if this is even an idea they are entertaining.

At the very least, Matheny will join the team as a coach in some capacity.

And that will be awesome.

Just to have him around with his experience will be great for this team.
