My love for you has been … rocky, to say the least.
There were times like September 24, 2011, when you stole second base and then moved over to third thanks to a throwing error by the Cubs Geovany Soto. The sequence of events led to a lovely walk off victory over the Cubs. That still makes me smile!
And then there were the errors, misplays, overly-ambitious attempts at making a snazzy play, hitting, running … Oh yes, I could go on. But you catch my drift. There have been some bone head moves on your part, sweetheart.
As soon as the retirement of Tony LaRussa was announced and Mike Matheny was named the new skipper, many … myself included … wondered what on earth this could mean for you.
We would soon find out, the job at second base has been yours for the taking. Mike has had all the confidence in the world that you’re more than capable of handling second base. So, Cardinal Nation should trust him … Right!
I’ll be honest, I had my hopes set that Dirty Dan would get the second base job and you’d back him and Rafael up. But … Tyler… I’ll hand it you …
You have worked your tail off!
Getting to Jupiter before pitchers and catchers were to arrive ? Getting some early work in? Working with some Cardinal greats to improve your skills at the position? Not that Daniel hasn’t worked as hard, but you are putting forth the effort that you want this job. You want to earn it. I admire that a lot!
So how have you done this spring? You’ve turned eight double plays in the 10 games you’ve started at second, you have six hits and four stolen bases. Not bad!
You and Dirty Dan even had this beautiful double steal… Look at you! You stole home!
So Tyler … my love … I am giving you a chance this season. I have even vowed to try to avoid calling you TPG … err… Tyler Perry Greene. I want you to do well. I want you to make spectacular plays at second. I want you to hit. I want you to steal all the bases. If you are the Cardinals new starting second baseman on opening day, I will cheer loudly for you.
I’m not certain I deserve the honor of being the president of your fan club, as I already have those duties with the clubs for David Freese, John Gast and … yeah … but I will definitely sign up for membership in this great club.
I want less of this …
And way more of this …
If you can do that this season, you will prove all of your haters wrong.
And that would be an amazingly, satisfying goal to accomplish!
That is my hope for you Tyler … Prove your haters wrong.
I’ll be watching!
All my love,
