Skip Schumaker has been projected as the club’s super utility, go-to guy.
Skip received a set back over the weekend when he strained his right oblique muscle. He reportedly winced when he fouled a ball off toward the Marlins’ third-base dugout and then came out of the game after grounding out to second base.
Further testing on Monday indicated that the oblique is torn.
According to Derrick Goold in the the Post-Dispatch:
A scan of Schumaker’s injured right side Monday confirmed the team’s expectations, that the incumbent second baseman had suffered a tear in the muscle that runs along the rib cage. General manager John Mozeliak said it’s highly probable Schumaker will open the regular season on the disabled list, though an exact timetable for his rehab and recovery won’t be set until later this week.
Here’s more on the injury from Jenifer Langosh at Cardinals.com.
Get well Skip! Heal that oblique! We need you man!
