Cards Beat Brewers 11-5

Carlos Beltran

What a third inning… Ah, who am I kidding? What a game!

New manager Mike Matheny and the Cardinals are now 2-0 on the season with the 11-5 victory over their divisional rival Brewers.

Now back to that third inning!

Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday hit back-to-back home runs. Lance Berkman gets on base and David Freese hits a bomb to left field. Absolutely beautiful. Don’t believe me? Here’s the highlight reel!

Yadier Molina had a solo homer in the second inning. Freese singled in the fourth to score Rafael Furcal. In the sixth, Berkman doubled to score Beltran. In the seventh, Shane Robinson singled to score Jon Jay. And in the ninth, Matt Carpenter knocked a double to score Yadi and Daniel Descalso. And Furcal doubled to score Matt Carp.

Speaking of Dirty Dan!

I hope you are seated. He had this play in the fifth. According to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com, “Jonathan Lucroy collided with second baseman Daniel Descalso as Descalso moved in to field a grounder. Lucroy was called out, and Mat Gamel, who had just scored, was forced to return to third.”

That’s right. Interference.

Dan didn’t even care that he was getting hit. Just took it. That’s scrappy. I like it! Not that I don’t love Tyler Greene, but I do like that Dan is getting starts at second. He keeps proving he deserves it.

As for pitching, Jaime Garcia got his first win of the season. He pitched six innings. He gave up five hits and two earned runs. He struck out three and walked two. J.C. Romero gave up two hits. Mitchell Boggs pitched two innings. Giving up one hit and striking out two. Boggs, who Fox Sports Midwest broadcasters said was pleased to be working with pitching coach Derek Lilliquist, was pretty impressive in his two innings of relief.

Kyle McClellan tried to make things interesting in the ninth, though.

He gave up two hits … including a three-run homer to pinch hitter George Kottaras. I seriously thought I was flashing back to last April. Not fun, K-Mc! Let’s clean that up, OK!

Tomorrow’s game looks to be excellent! Adam Wainwright returns to the mound against Zach Greinke and the Brewers. Exciting! Here’s a little preview!
