After an impressive rehab performance in Memphis in which he 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs, the Cardinals have activated Allen Craig from the disabled list.
Erik Komatsu has been designated for assignment.
According to the Derrick Goold of the Post Dispatch:
Craig will join the team this afternoon and be active for tonight’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Komatsu, a Rule 5 selection, will pass through waivers before the Cardinals must offer him back to his former team, the Washington Nationals.
The 28 other teams will have the opportunity to pick up Komatsu and, per Rule 5 requirements, place him on their 25-man active roster.
The Cardinals can also work out a trade with the Nationals to retain the rights of Komatsu and then option him to Class AAA Memphis.
According to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com, Craig is expected to take a majority of the playing time at first base until Lance Berkman returns from the disabled list. This will give Matt Carpenter some much needed time to rest up and be available where ever he is needed.
