Beltran Powers Cards Past Bucs, 12-3

Carlos Beltran had a 7 RBI performance Wednesday night.

Carlos Beltran is one of your favorite Cardinals now. Am I right?

After belting two… Yes, 2 3-run home runs and collecting seven … that’s right … 7 RBI, he’s won the heart of many a Cardinal fan! Beltran’s monster performance helped the Cards defeat the Pirates 12-3.

The Cards got to Pirates pitcher AJ Burnett in the first inning, making fans question that version of Burnett who was lights out good in Pittsburgh last week.

Matt Holliday scored the first run of the game in the first, knocking in Rafael Furcal. Beltran then blasted his first 3-run shot of the night to deep right field, knocking in Jon Jay and Holliday.

In the second inning, Holliday singled in Furcal. Beltran singled in Jay. David Freese hit into a double play, but it allowed Holliday to score.

Daniel Descalso had a run scoring triple in the third to score Matt Carpenter. Descalso scored after Rafael Furcal knocked him with a ground out. Jon Jay and Matt Holliday got on base just ahead of Beltran who, after a review of the shot from umpires, blasted his second 3-run shot of the game.

And that would be all the Cards needed…

But wait!

The Cards secured their huge lead with an equally monster performance from Lance Lynn. Get this … Wolf Pup is now 5-0! The guy. Who was slated to be in the bullpen? He’s 5-0! Awesome. Pure. Awesome.

Lynn pitched 6 2/3 innings for the Cards. He gave up three hits and two earned runs. He struck six and gave up one walk. Boom. Awesome.

But wait! There is more!

Marc Rzepczynski, Kyle McClellan and Mitchell Boggs pitched the final 2 1/3 innings. Zep and McClellan each gave up a hit. McClellan struck out one. And Boggs allowed one run to score.

Sure, this type of performance would make any fan nervous in a close game. Thankfully, the Cardinals didn’t have that problem.

Could a sweep be in the Cards? We shall see!

Jake Westbrook, who is 3-1, will take the mound in a 12:45 p.m. start for Cardinals today at Busch. Erik Bedard, 1-2, takes to the mound for the Pirates.
