Pretty in pink, that is.

Remember last year when all the guys wore turtle necks (that was on a West Coast trip too, right?)? Or how about their luau theme travel attire?

See? I told you. Pretty in pink.

It seems these silly stress-reducers are inspired by Lance himself, so it’s only fitting that he lead the way in today’s “ugly tuxedo” getup with the baby-pink beauty to the right.

Hey, real men wear pink, right? I think he wears it brilliantly.

If you’re interested, you can see Willy Wonk, er, I mean, Mitchell Boggs in his own brightly colored ensemble (complete with cane and top hat!), or Daniel Descalso rocking the powder blue. Word is, David Freese was in red and white, and Adam Wainwright’s costume included a kilt.

How’s that for team bonding?

So, you’re probably wanting actual game notes now. That’s not nearly as much fun to talk about as Ugly Tux Day, though!

It was a rough day on the diamond for the Redbirds, who were hoping for the two-game sweep of the Giants to keep the ball rolling before taking on the Dodgers. But, in keeping with the, um, “aesthetic” theme, how about a round of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly?

The Good

Matt Carpenter was 3-for-5 on the day, scoring two runs. One of his runs was on a Matt Holliday two-run homer that gave the Cardinals a lead in the third inning.

I can’t lie, the Matt+Matt combo is one I wouldn’t mind seeing more often! Hashtag #MattSquared, anyone?

But I digress.

Lance Berkman had a pair of hits on the day, and Yadier Molina hit a solo blast in the eighth. But, by that point the Cardinals were on the comeback trail, and it wasn’t quite enough.

The Bad

Adam Wainwright went 5.2 innings, giving up five runs on four hits (only two earned … but we’ll get to that), walking four and striking out one.

Not exactly vintage Waino, there. Plus, seeing him still struggling is automatically a bad thing. I know, he’s working his way back from surgery. But he just doesn’t seem comfortable with the fastball, in particular, and on more than one occasion seemed frustrated with location and command (or the lack thereof).

Also, Kyle McClellan left the game after just a third of an inning with “elbow discomfort.” Right now, that’s bad. But depending on the diagnosis, it could slide into the “ugly” category. Any kind of elbow discomfort makes me a little queasy.

The Ugly

In the bottom of the first inning, Brandon Crawford doubled off of Wainwright. He then advanced to third on an error by Carpenter. He would score in the inning.

In the second inning, Emmanuel Burriss reached first on a fielding error by Berkman. After two ground outs and a walk, he was at third. He would go on to score on a Crawford single.

In the sixth, with two outs and one run already in, pinch hitter Aubrey Huff reached on an error by David Freese (I didn’t see it, but I hear the throw was more than a little off the mark … like, into the stands off the mark). Brandon Belt scored the go-ahead run.

So, yeah. Waino’s line doesn’t look great, but three runs scored on three errors. That makes it a lot uglier.

Add the two runs that scored in the seventh, and not even the Yadi-Bomb could save this mess, and the Cardinals would lose 7-5.

Thank goodness for those pictures, right?
