Can we just call this the road trip from hell?
After injuring his right knee in last night’s Cardinals 6-0 loss to the Dodgers, Lance Berkman was placed on the disabled list this afternoon. This, of course, is after Allen Craig and Kyle McClellan went on the DL Friday.
Taking LB’s spot on the roster is Matt Adams. He, as we know, is the slugging first baseman who had such an impressive spring training and was hitting .340 with nine homers and 27 RBI at Memphis this season.
The Twitterverse was all agog over Adams last night when he was removed from the Redbirds game, and the hysteria hasn’t slowed down a bit since then. Not that the hype isn’t deserved — but some of us have known what he’s capable of since seeing him earlier in his minor league career.
Also, it’s a rare day when I’ll point out Joe Strauss makes an excellent point but today is one of those times. As Strauss said on Twitter about half an hour ago: “It’s a bit baffling that so many perceive the news of Adams’ promotion as more significant than Berkman to DL. Maybe one day, but not today.”
The official announcement about LB and Adams was reported by Paul Casella at Cardinals.com and by Strauss at STLToday.com.
The extent of LB’s injury is not yet known, as he will have an MRI tomorrow in St. Louis. He’s only played in 13 games this season and just hit his first homer of the year Friday night.
Tonight the Cardinals attempt to salvage the final game of the series to the Dodgers while on national TV. Game time is 7 p.m. Central on ESPN.

In regards to Strauss, it really isn’t that baffling:
Berkman on the DL again? “Yawn. So what else is new?”
The Cardinals’ top hitting prospect to make his big league debut? “Now, that’s worth tuning in to see!”
It may not be the hyped debut of Bryce Harper, which happened under similar circumstances for the Nationals, but Matt Adams is the future. Lance Berkman, while we’re thankful for his efforts last year, represents the past.
