Matt Holliday’s strained hamstring now has landed him on the 15-day disabled list.
Jenifer Langsoch of Cardinals.com reports that Holliday “did admit on Friday that his hamstring still felt tight when he tested it running. Such limitations were forcing the Cardinals to play one short on the five-man bench.”
Holliday injured him hamstring running in a game on July 11 against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Taking his spot on the roster is Brock Peterson, a first baseman/outfielder who was hitting .306 with 22 home runs at Triple-A Memphis.
This marks the first Major League call-up for Peterson, who is expected to be in St. Louis in time for Saturday’s night game against the Padres. A 49th-round Draft pick by the Twins in 2002, Peterson also made a stop in the Independent League before being signed by the Cardinals as a Minor League free agent last August.
He represented Memphis in the Triple-A All-Star Game earlier this week. His 66 RBIs rank fourth in the Pacific Coast League, and Peterson has hit .341 against lefties and .301 with runners in scoring position. Though he has played exclusively at first base for Memphis this season, Peterson does also have some outfield experience.
Peterson was added to the 40-man roster before being called up.
Holliday is eligible to return from the disabled list on July 27, since he hasn’t played in a game since July 12.
